Shades of Colour
KG1 started off their first unit ‘Who we are’ by inquiring about their families and families around the world. Children went on a gallery walk where they were able to compare different families and their family structures. This then led them to ask many questions and inquire about their similarities and differences provoking questions about their skin colour. Children read a book called ‘Shades of People’ which clarified a lot of questions children had.
This allowed children to understand and comprehend the different shades of colour we all are and understood that we are all unique and special, no matter our colour. Children mixed colours together to match their shade of skin. This activity was great fun for all our children, and it enabled our children to be open-minded and promoted diversity and inclusion recognising the different cultures and backgrounds of our students and families.
