Back to School: Teachers’ Orientation and Professional Development

At the beginning of this year, the school ensured all elements were in place for a successful reopening, including all recommended precautions and safety measures necessary in light of the current pandemic. This, of course, has created new challenges in the teaching and learning processes. Therefore, our staff underwent pedagogical training workshops and training on the effective use of our learning platforms and programs offered by the school. AIA also made available social and emotional support to our staff at this stage. At AIA we believe that professional development is one of the most significant elements that cultivates the culture of learning within the school and helps with the growth of the learning community. For this reason, we implement a professional development plan for all teachers to stay up to date with the best pedagogical approaches that enhance the learning and the well-being of our students. Part of our professional development plan is the back-to-school orientation program which takes place at the beginning of every school year. For two weeks in August 2020, all teachers were trained on the school policies, procedures, and expectations. Our main focus this year was to provide a safe environment, both physically and virtually, for our students to continue to enjoy the process of learning. Thus, our orientation program introduced teachers to the safety and security measures that our school has put in place in response to the current situation and the outbreak of COVID-19. Teachers were also trained on using different platforms where face to face and online learning can be integrated. The teachers also attended a five-day training about the teaching strategies and tools used in online learning and assessment. We also provide ongoing weekly professional development to support teachers as they strive to implement the best classroom practices. To ensure the successful completion of this academic year, we at AIA rely on the guidance and support of parents, as well as the maturity and responsible behaviour of our students.
